This is it. Over
the weekend, Liverpool will be torn in two, as it’s most historic and reputable
Universities engage in battle all over Merseyside, to determine who is athletically
superior. On Sunday afternoon – commencing at midday – the city will grind to a
halt as the respective university’s football teams will step onto the hallowed
Wyncote turf, in what promises to be 180 minutes of intense, epic football.
Strap in – you will not want to miss it.
The first
game of Sunday will feature both 2nd XI’s facing off and throwing
down. University of Liverpool 2’s are riding high after claiming the league
title at a canter, and will be feeling confident going into the fixture.
Manager Joe Bone has proved to be a revelation at the helm of the squad, implementing
a brand of flowing, exciting
football. In particular, this was on show in their recent 4-2 victory in an
inter-University derby against the admirably performing 3’s – Alfie Edmondson
bagging a hattrick in an electric individual, and team, performance. With their
league fixtures concluded, the 2’s will look to cap off their season in
flamboyant fashion – a John Moore’s demolition job fitting the bill perfectly.
Following
the 2’s Varsity game, the main event of the evening will commence as the 1st
XI’s enter the field of battle. The Wyncote Faithful are due to turn out in droves
to see this gargantuan game take place, and it is unlikely to disappoint them. The
University of Liverpool 1’s will feel confident after last seasons’ performance
against Sunday’s opposition in League, Cup and Varsity. A famous, late Louis
Jarvis goal in the dying embers of last season served to clinch the 1’s the League
Title and relegate Sunday’s opposition. The in-form winger will look to repeat
the trick come Sunday, to cement himself as LJMU’s bogeyman. However, the
opposition will be well-aware of the threat Jarvis and the other members of the
front-line provide, so the attackers will need to be on top form.
It is
also important to consider those who will make their debut in the lauded Varsity
Game, and who will be playing their last. After his historic winner against
Glasgow, versatile attacker Daniel Lewis will be lacing up for the final time,
and will be adamant to make the John Moore’s defenders lives miserable. Conversely,
first year students Todd Watts (CM) and Alex Urbicki (GK) will be making their first
Varsity appearance’s, and will want to cement their names in campus legend.
Finally, third year Ivo Christie will appear as a 3’s call-up and 1’s debutant
and will look to finish his university football career with a flourish.
Regardless of this speculation, one
thing is certain: a game of this monumental proportion cannot be missed. Local
rivalry, personal agenda and university pride is at stake, and all four teams
involved will require their respective fanbases to back them to the hilt and provide
immense support. Get yourself down to Wyncote if you can, for an exhibition of
the finest football talent Liverpool has to offer.
